Jack Daniels Gets in on the Action

June 11, 2012 8 Comments

One issue with all the alcohol problems we experience is we draw even more marketers of alcohol products.

Just today I was surprised to see the new Jack Daniels Whiskey mural go up on the 1001 Garnet Ave. building at Cass St. This seems to be excessive in size and the overall impact is well, nauseating.

This sign appears to be over 1,100 square ft. That’s like a punch in the eye to a lot of us who are trying to learn how to live with this industry and work to improve conditions. Guess JD didn’t get that memo.

The token ‘responsibility’ message is in small scroll print in the lower left corner exclaiming ‘live free, drink sensibly’. Right. In the San Diego neighborhood with the highest levels of alcohol-related crime, an abnormally high number of police and ambulance calls and record DUI arrests CLEARLY indicate that many of our guests and patrons have a problem ‘drinking sensibly’.

Are you happy with this sign? Leave your comments here and head on over to Facebook.com/JackDaniels and let them know what you think. They were kind enough to paint this on the mural as well.

Here’s a few photos:

Sorry. I was able to see it on my iPhone, but came here and couldn’t find it. Apologies.

Hang on there… I didn’t delete, I just hold for moderation to keep spam to a minimum :) Thanks for your feedback – only agenda here is to lower alcohol-related crimes and negative impacts on our community. Check SanDiegoALE.com for an extensive discussion on what steps we could take and why.

  3. Rick Rosen says:

Why did you erase my last post? Weird. You asked in your blog above, “Are you happy with this sign?” I responded, and you kindly deleted that response. Perhaps it wasn’t what you were looking for. I believe I do smell an agenda here at PBSpirits.

  4. Rick says:

The funny thing is that I must have driven by that flag twenty times before I realized there was something in the center!!! Personally, I don’t really mind it, its not “in your face,” and the fact that it looks to be hand-painted is pretty impressive. What would we rather have in its place? A fast food mural? Another needless pitch for us to buy gas guzzling autos? Or clothes? We just can’t get away from the toxic culture we’ve created for ourselves, and our PB community isn’t immune. At the very least local business owners are likely profiting.

  5. pbSpirits says:

Yah, I have no gripe with alcohol advertisers. It just seems to be adding insult to injury to have such a massive billboard – about 6 times bigger than most every other PB billboard – promoting not our community as was the original thought of the building’s owners (the beach ball ‘welcome to Pacific Beach’ message) – plopped down on our main drag. From what I understand alcohol advertising is intended to get people to switch brands, not necessarily drink more. I can’t argue the European question because I just don’t know. I do believe however that our bodies and brains aren’t fully developed until our early 20’s so I’m not sure any toxic substance is helping (including the myriad of other toxic substances we expose our youth to i.e. industrial chemicals and food additives).

  6. Rick says:

Perhaps doing battle with alcohol advertising is a waste of your time. Having spent plenty of time overseas, I can tell you that many European cities are littered w/ alcohol advertisements. In addition, the legal age to consume alcohol is drastically younger than in America (often there are no age restrictions.) Oddly though, they don’t have the alcohol related issues that we see here in PB – Alcohol poisoning, tons of DUI’s, alcohol related violence/crime. On the contrary, the taboo and “illicit” allure is taken away early on, and alcohol responsibility Is ingrained at a young age. Thoughts?

  7. pbSpirits says:

As a matter of fact I do. I guess you’re happy with PB being turned into a bar… with all the related problems? See also http://www.sandiegoALE.com – which is an effort I’m taking to work towards solutions vs. just complaining. Some people act and some judge prior to investigation. Personally, I’m not happy or content with the abnormal number of problems (alcohol-related crimes) PB has. Things like this billboard are just pouring fuel on the fire imho.

Who cares? Don’t you have something better to do with your time?
