Drunk in PB at 2AM? Cops in the Rear View Mirror? Ditch the Car, Disappear in the Ocean!January 10, 2012 No Comments
SAN DIEGO — Authorities searched for hours early Tuesday for a man suspected of drunken driving who ran away from police and jumped into the ocean in Pacific Beach.
Officers pulled over the driver about 2:15 a.m. near Mission Boulevard and Reed Avenue, San Diego police said.
But the driver got out and took off, ran to the beach and dived into the water.
Police called lifeguards who used paddle boards to look for him while Copter 2 scoured the water from the air, San Diego Fire-Rescue spokesman Maurice Luque said.
The search was suspended about 3:20 a.m. but police continued to patrol the shore, Luque said. The man had been with a friend who stayed with the truck, Luque said. The friend told officers that the man, identified as a 28-year-old from La Mesa, was a surfer and a good swimmer, Luque said.
His name has not been released.
Luque said the waves were about 4 feet high and the water temperature was around 56 degrees, with a strong underwater current.
A Coast Guard helicopter started a search at about 5:45 a.m.
Luque said lifeguards will resume looking for him on personal watercraft in the morning.
Lifeguards said it is possible that he swam to shore in the darkness and got out of the water undetected but his whereabouts remain unknown.
Total lobster move on this one… feeling like a jackass for having one too many? Only one thing to do: pull over, ditch your buddy, run straight for the ocean, and swim like hell. I wasn’t sure how many La Mesa lobsters we had out there, but this confirms it… there’s at least one.
Also, guarantee that because of this article… this will be the new method of escaping for all PB attempted arrests. There you are, stumbling out of Miller’s Field after mouthin’ off to Sumo and Mikey because you got too drunk… cops roll up, Sumo points to you… and the race is on… TO THE OCEAN!
Drownings in PB should be up at least 15% in 2012. Be smart, kids. Better to get bodyslammed by Sumo or Mikey than it is to go to jail…or deadville by drowning.
**UPDATE** This dude has been found. Although he won’t be subject to a DUI charge, (I don’t think) he can look forward to multiple charges including resisting arrest…not to mention a hefty fine for rescue fees.
